Thomas West is a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) who practices in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Tom focuses his efforts on families planning for their retirement. His financial planning practice services clients with fee-based asset management and financial planning needs, as well as helping families with specific requirements for insurance protection products. He has particular expertise in planning and asset management for families facing the challenge of a health-related dependency.

Tom has been working for years in our community by improving the financial literacy of families facing a wide range of challenges. Along with one of his business partners, Tom has developed and taught the Retirement Planning and Long Term Care Planning curriculum offered through Fairfax County Adult Education for over eight years.

Regarding long term care planning, Tom is proud of his 2004 efforts as a founder of the Fairfax Caregiving Seminar Consortium (FCSC), a public / private / non-profit partnership that includes the Fairfax County Area Agency on Aging, Fairfax County Libraries, and the Alzheimer’s Association, among others. This group is committed to educating families facing the challenges of caregiving in the Northern Virginia area. Tom is active in the regional aging advocacy group, the Northern Virginia Aging Network (NVAN). He regularly consults with the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) on matters relating to long term care insurance. In 2007, Tom was among the first certified trainers in the state of Virginia to qualify to teach insurance and other professionals about the Virginia Long Term Care Partnership Program. Furthermore, having served on the Board of Directors for the National Capital Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association (NCCAA) for six years, Tom has driven much of the financial-related workshops and seminars that the NCCAA has conducted. Tom is routinely selected by professional organizations to teach financial planning techniques for families to tax preparers, attorneys, insurance agents, and asset management professionals.

Tom’s efforts have not gone unrecognized in the press. He has been was quoted in Businessweek, AARP’s Segunda Juventud, and the DC-based Senior Beacon.   He has been interviewed on Washington’s WTOP News Radio and spotlighted on Comcast’s Headline News.
